Sybarite Selections: English Autumn Escapes

Pack your bags, it’s time to be whisked away to an idyllic English town for a weekend break this Autumn. We’ve selected our five favourite spots.
Rye, East Sussex

Tudor houses line cobbled streets in this historic little Sussex town. Only a couple of miles from the sea, it still has its own harbour and is filled with rich history and great character. Visit Ypres Tower or take a walk through the Rye Marshes before enjoying a locally-sourced meal at The Landgate Bistro and retiring to The George in Rye Hotel.
As it’s only a two-hour journey from London St. Pancras, Rye also makes for an easy day trip.

Burford, Oxfordshire

The Cotswolds have an abundance of beautiful towns and villages, yet Burford is what one might see as the quintessential English village. Filled with sloping yellow limestone houses covered in shrubbery, this Medieval town is a perfect tranquil getaway. Take in the beautiful views over the open countryside, down to the willow-fringed River Windrush, enjoy a spot of tea on the high street and later, live music and local ale at one of the town’s pubs. Burford House Hotel – a stunning 17th century stone landmark – is highly regarded as one of the best in the area and will ensure a deep, restful night’s sleep and a serene weekend break.

Polperro, Cornwall

This seaside town is just as gorgeous in the colder months thanks to the jumble of pretty whitewashed cottages wedges along twisting streets that lead down to a harbour. Hidden in the folds of the cliffs between Fowey and Looe, Polperro is a real picture-perfect postcard treasure. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the autumn sunset and enjoy the Cornish local produce and fresh fish straight from the sea. Although there is a selection of delightful B&B’s in Polperro, the tranquil Penryn House gets our vote for a weekend break thanks to its immaculate service.

Abbotsbury, Dorset

A haven of art galleries and wood workshops, the village of Abbotsbury is just a mile from the Jurassic Coast. The subtropical gardens are an undeniable attraction to the area – the Victorian innovation set in a woodland valley has its own microclimate so makes for a great visit all year round. Moonfleet Manor hotel is undeniably a top pick for accommodation. The luxurious Georgian property is set amongst tranquil surroundings and features quirky colonial décor.

Hawkshead, Cumbria

This stunning village is set in the southern Lake District amongst rolling green hills and is the perfect destination for those wanting to get away from it all. With 17th century architecture and a glorious church dating back to 1300, Hawkshead is also a real drinking den for lovers of good quality booze, a roaring fire, and hearty food.  Stay at the Swan Hotel, just 20 minutes drive from Hawkshead, which boasts a spa and pool, ideal for cooling off after a day of rambling in the spectacular countryside.
